Until 21st January Exhibition: From Parlourmaid to Peer - Life on the Country Estates St. Barbe Museum, Lymington For centuries the country houses and estates played a central role in the social, political and economic life of the countryside. This area had its grand houses such as Pylewell, Walhampton and Newlands, which attracted royal visitors, and more modest homes where there was a constant struggle to keep up appearances. The army of domestic servants and estate workers needed to service these houses provided employment for many local people. Owners played major roles in shaping the locality, some were players on the national stage: the Marchioness of Hastings who lived at Efford Park was a pioneer fossil hunter in the early 19th century, Auberon Herbert of Ashley Arnewood was a radical MP, while Sir Harry Burrard Neale became a national hero and friend of George III. Find out more about life upstairs and downstairs on the local estates at an exhibition full of images, memories of days gone by and extraordinary episodes in local history. 8th January Lymington Film Society web Fuller McLellan Hall, New St, Lymington Non-members welcome, £5 on the door. 7.30pm Le Concert (French) 2009, 1hrs 59mins, cert PG, subtitled - A world famous conductor is sacked from his place at the head of the Bolshoi Orchestra for employing Jewish musicians. 30 years on he gets the chance for his old orchestra to perform again.
