This area had its grand houses such as Pylewell, Walhampton and Newlands, which attracted royal visitors, and more modest homes where there was a constant struggle to keep up appearances. The army of domestic servants and estate workers needed to service these houses provided employment for many local people. Owners played major roles in shaping the locality, some were players on the national stage: the Marchioness of Hastings who lived at Efford Park was a pioneer fossil hunter in the early 19th century, Auberon Herbert of Ashley Arnewood was a radical MP, while Sir Harry Burrard Neale became a national hero and friend of George III.
